Chip Enabled Debit & Global Payment Cards

May 7, 2010

Chip - Making safer slogan

Spectra Credit Union is pleased to announce that chip enabled MemberCards, Global Payment Cards, and Global Gold Payment cards are on their way to our members.  Beginning April, 2010, all cards that mature will be replaced with chip enabled cards.

A chip card is a credit or debit card containing an embedded computer chip, which gives the card the ability to store and process data.  Chip cards and chip terminals work together to ensure a highly secure transaction by validating the card and the cardholder.

What do I need to do?

You don't have to do anything - you will automatically receive your new card in the mail just prior to the expiration of your current card. For your security, your Personal Identification Number (PIN) will come in the mail 2-3 days prior to your new card.  Hold onto this letter and watch the mail for your new card.

Note - if you have used multiple Member Cards in the past to meet your banking needs, please review the card and letter carefully to ensure you know which card has been replaced.

Changing your PIN is simple.  If you would like to change that PIN, or you have forgotten it, just visit your local branch of Spectra Credit Union to have it reset.

Your Personal Identification Number (PAN) will change.  Your PAN will be different.  If you have set up a memorized account in Member Direct, you will have to change the number on your first log in.  Any PAN that you have associated with your Global Payment card, may have to be adjusted (eg - Pay Pal account)

What will be different for me?

Not much.  When using your chip card to make a purchase, it will remain in the merchant's terminal for the duration of the transaction, rather than being 'swiped' through.  As always, you'll enter your PIN and follow the prompts to complete your transaction.  At an ATM you'll notice now difference at all.

You will be able to use your chip card anywhere in the world; at any Automated Teller Machine (ATM) or retail location on the Interac and associated international networks.
